Dental Implants

Dental implants are changing the way people live. They are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. The person who has lost teeth regains the ability to eat virtually anything, knowing that teeth appear natural and that facial contours will be preserved. Patients with dental implants can smile with confidence.

What Are Dental Implants?

The implants themselves are small titanium screws that are surgically placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. These metal anchors act as tooth root substitutes. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. Small posts that protrude through the gums are then attached to the implant. These posts provide stable anchors for artificial replacement teeth.

Implants also help preserve facial structure, preventing bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing.

The Surgical Procedure

For most patients, the placement of dental implants involves two surgical procedures. First, implants are placed within your jawbone. For the first three to six months following surgery, the implants are beneath the surface of the gums gradually bonding with the jawbone. You should be able to wear temporary dentures and eat a soft diet during this time. At the same time, your dentist is forming new replacement teeth.

After the implant has bonded to the jawbone, the second phase begins. Drs. or will uncover the implants and attach small posts that protrude through the gums and will act as anchors for the artificial teeth. When the artificial teeth are placed, these posts will not be seen. The entire procedure usually takes six to eight months. Most patients experience minimal disruption in their daily life.

Surgical Advances

Using the most recent advances in dental implant technology, Drs. or  are able to place single stage implants. These implants do not require a second procedure to uncover them, but do require a minimum of six weeks of healing time before artificial teeth are placed. There are even situations where the implants can be placed at the same time as a tooth extraction – further minimizing the number of surgical procedures.

Dental Implant placement is a team effort between an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a restorative dentist. While Drs. or perform the actual implant surgery, initial tooth extractions, and bone grafting if necessary, the restorative dentist (your dentist) fits and makes the permanent prosthesis. Your dentist will also make any temporary prosthesis needed during the implant process.

What Types Of Prosthesis Are Available?

A single prosthesis (crown) is used to replace one missing tooth – each prosthetic tooth attaches to its own implant. A partial prosthesis (fixed bridge) can replace two or more teeth and may require only two or three implants. A complete dental prosthesis (fixed bridge) replaces all the teeth in your upper or lower jaw. The number of implants varies depending upon which type of complete prosthesis (removable or fixed) is recommended. A removable prosthesis (over denture) attaches to a bar or ball in socket attachments, whereas a fixed prosthesis is permanent and removable only by the dentist.

Drs. or perform in-office implant surgery in a hospital-style operating suite, thus optimizing the level of sterility. Inpatient hospital implant surgery is for patients who have special medical or anesthetic needs or for those who need extensive bone grafting from the jaw, hip or tibia.

Why Dental Implants?

Once you learn about dental implants, you finally realize there is a way to improve your life. When you lose several teeth – whether it’s a new situation or something you have lived with for years – chances are you have never become fully accustomed to losing such a vital part of yourself.

Dental implants can be your doorway to renewed self-confidence and peace of mind.

A Swedish scientist and orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Per-Ingvar Branemark, developed this concept for oral rehabilitation more than 35 years ago. With his pioneering research, Dr. Branemark opened the door to a lifetime of renewed comfort and self-confidence for millions of individuals facing the frustration and embarrassment of tooth loss.

Why Select Dental Implants Over More Traditional Types Of Restorations?

There are several reasons: Why sacrifice the structure of surrounding good teeth to bridge a space? In addition, removing a denture or a “partial” at night may be inconvenient, not to mention that dentures that slip can be uncomfortable and rather embarrassing.

Are You A Candidate For Implants?

If you are considering implants, your mouth must be examined thoroughly and your medical and dental history reviewed. If your mouth is not ideal for implants, ways of improving outcome, such as bone grafting, may be recommended.

What Type Of Anesthesia Is Used?

The majority of dental implants and bone graft can be performed in the office under local anesthesia, with or without general anesthesia.

Do Implants Need Special Care?

Once the implants are in place, they will serve you well for many years if you take care of them and keep your mouth healthy. This means taking the time for good oral hygiene (brushing and flossing) and keeping regular appointments with your dental specialists.

I had a dental cyst at the root of my molar, requiring removal of tooth and cyst. Dr. Saker pulled the tooth and removed the cyst, and later, installed the implant. Both procedures were flawless. At the pre surgery consultations, Dr. Saker explained the procedures in details, answered all questions thoroughly, took all the time necessary to make sure I understood. Dr. Saker and the staff made sure I was relaxed during the procedures, and recoveries. The clinic is state of the art with best and latest equipment. I highly recommend Ridgewwod oral surgery.

My partner needed an emergency tooth extraction on a Saturday and luckily we were referred to ROSI. We called to see if there was any availabilityor time they could fit us in and they thankfully they could take us within 30 minutes. We went in, filled out paperwork from the very helpful people at the front desk and quickly were told to meet with the doctor for a consult. Easily the quickest wait time I've ever experienced in any sort of medical office and so comfortable and welcoming. We met with Dr. Wang and he told us what the options were and advised us what would be the best option in the long term to make sure there wasn't any infection or any other damage. Once we made the choice of extraction, my partner went in, had the prep done and was out in easily 10-15 minutes. He has huge anxiety when it comes to seeing dental professionals, but he came out smiling and feeling so much better. We scheduled a follow up and when we returned for that, it was in and out and everything was healing properly and really progressing nicely. We couldn't have been happier with ROSI and are so lucky to have been referred to them. Whenever we experience any issues in the future, I will definitely be going to them and I would absolutely recommend them to family and friends.

I was referred to Dr. Saker by my dentist for a dental implant. My first impression when visiting the office was that I was greeted by professionally attired staff, who greeted me warmly, and were only a few inches away as I did not have to speak with them through a glass partition. I find glass partitions filled with rules and regulations typed on copy paper to be very annoying, they look like dorm-room bulletin boards. While the clerical staff and dental assistants obviously interface with so many people each day, I felt that I was very important to them throughout my visits. My care and comfort were paramount. Dr. Saker's demeanor and obvious high level skill as an oral surgeon was obvious from the moment he entered the exam room for my initial consultation and continued through the actual dental implant procedure and my follow-up visit. As a health care practitioner I have high expectations and I am pleased to say that my experience exceeded these expectations. I highly recommend Dr. Saker without reservation!

I was referred to Dr. Saker by my dentist to have two molars removed, one in which was infected. After an immediate consultation he took me 2 days later even though he was booked for 2 months. The procedure went smoothly but my body did not respond well to the pain meds. I called his emergency number on a Sunday, he immediately got back to me and called in a new prescription. It seemed my body did not respond to that one so he asked me to come in so he could check the extractions. They took me one hour after I called. He inserted a (pain blocker ) on the one site where the pain was the worst and prescribed a new pain med. I am beyond grateful for the pain relief and am so thankful for his concern over my situation and his professionalism and helpfulness in making me pain free. He went out of his way to find the right combination for me. There are not many doctors who go above and beyond but this practice does. Thank you as well to their wonderful staff who calmed any of my anxiety and made me feel comfortable!
