What to Eat After Wisdom Teeth Removal

Recovering from wisdom teeth removal can be a breeze—especially when you know what to eat to help your body heal while keeping your mouth comfortable. At Ridgewood Oral Surgery, we want to guide you through every step of your recovery, starting with the question many patients ask first: “What can I eat after wisdom teeth removal?”

Why Your Diet Matters

After your wisdom teeth are removed, the surgical sites are especially sensitive. Eating the right foods can:

  • Support healing and reduce inflammation
  • Prevent irritation or infection at the extraction site
  • Minimize the risk of complications like dry socket
  • Sticking to a soft, nutritious, and gentle diet for the first few days is key.

Best Foods to Eat After Wisdom Teeth Removal

Day 1–2: Liquids & Smooth Foods

Your mouth will be sore and possibly swollen. Stick to liquids or very soft foods that require no chewing.

  • Broths (warm, not hot)
  • Smoothies (no seeds or straws—use a spoon)
  • Apple sauce
  • Greek yogurt
  • Pudding or gelatin
  • Protein shakes
  • Mashed potatoes (lukewarm)
  • Blended soups (like tomato or butternut squash)

Day 3–5: Soft Solids

As the swelling and discomfort begin to subside, you can start introducing soft solids.

  • Scrambled eggs
  • Oatmeal or cream of wheat
  • Soft pasta or overcooked noodles
  • Cottage cheese
  • Soft-cooked rice
  • Avocado
  • Mashed bananas

Foods to Avoid After Wisdom Teeth Removal

To protect your healing gums, avoid the following:

  • Crunchy foods (chips, nuts, granola)
  • Hard foods (raw vegetables, tough meats)
  • Sticky or chewy foods (caramel, gum)
  • Spicy foods (they can irritate the site)
  • Acidic foods and drinks (like citrus or soda)
  • Alcohol and caffeine (can slow healing)
  • Straws (sucking can cause dry socket)

Hydration is Essential

Drink plenty of water—but sip gently and avoid using a straw for at least one week post-op. Staying hydrated helps flush out toxins and promotes tissue healing.

A Few Extra Tips from Our Ridgewood Oral Surgery Team

  • Chew on the opposite side of your mouth.
  • Rinse gently with salt water after 24 hours—but avoid vigorous swishing.
  • Keep your head elevated to reduce swelling.
  • Stick to your post-op instructions and reach out if you have concerns.
